What is Pradaxa and Why is it Dangerous?

Pradaxa (dabigatran etexilate mesylate) was approved by The U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2010, for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation. It has been widely prescribed for off-label use as a "new generation" anti-coagulant medication.

The FDA is evaluating post-marketing reports of serious, or even fatal, bleeding events in patients taking Pradaxa. The FDA's objective is to determine whether or not the reports of bleeding in patients using Pradaxa are occurring more commonly than would have occurred from the use of any other anti-coagulant medication.

Boehringer Ingelheim, the creator of Pradaxa, continues to market the drug despite FDA concerns that it may increase the risk of serious or fatal bleeding. In November 2011, Boehringer admitted to knowledge of at least 260 cases of fatal bleeding.

The Pradaxa label warns patients of this potentially deathly side effect, as does their web site (see below), yet they continue to market the drug. In fact, on the Pradaxa web site, the first sentence beneath the headline "WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT INFORMATION I SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PRADAXA?" is, "PRADAXA can cause bleeding, which can be serious and sometimes lead to death." Please see yellow highlighted areas in screen capture of the Pradaxa web site below.
